The Florida Keys

I am finally back from a much needed break.  I had what was supposed to be 2 weeks off school but I was blessed with 3 extra days off because it has been so dang cold here.  So I decided it was best to share (and relive) our week trip to Florida.  Ryan and I got married in The Florida Keys and we have been going back every year.  This was Dean’s first trip and he loved it!  I did not expect him to enjoy the beach as much as he did.

We have many favorites and tend to hit up the same places every time we go.  Our wedding was in Islamorada and have always found this Key to be one of our favorites.  It is so relaxed there; you truly are on Island time.  We got married at Post Card Inn formerly known as Holiday Isle.  Love this hotel!  The rooms and the atmosphere with a beach and a bar are so much fun.  We had our rehearsal dinner at Lorelei Restaurant & Cabana Bar, I think the food is just ok but the atmosphere is amazing.  The best part is if you bring in your freshly caught fish, they will cook it for you.

We also enjoy feeding the Tarpon and Robbie’s Marina, it is a total tourist trap, yet so much fun.

Key West is definitely a party area, there is a bar every couple feet, we actually had a lot of fun with Dean this trip though.  We saw the sunset at Mallory Square and visited the Southern Most Point of the United States.  The line was song long because there was a cruise ship in port, so we made our own spot to take a picture.  Of course we hit up Garbo’s, my favorite “food truck” of all time.  Their Korean BBQ is sooooooo good Dean started saying “tacos.”  I shared my copy cat recipe here.

Some people say the Keys don’t have the best beaches but we find that to be so not true.  Our favorite free beach in Sombrero Beach in Marathon.  It has snorkeling, volleyball courts, a small pier to fish off, and a playground for kids.  Our other two favorites are Bahia Honda State Park in Big Pine Key, we didn’t make it this trip, and Fort Zachary Taylor State Park in Key West.  Bahia Honda is one of the beaches you see on the travel websites, so gorgeous.

I also wanted to give an update on the hurricane.  As most people know, Irma hit the keys in September.  There is still a lot of debris on the side of the road but most of the restaurants and hotels are open.  Unfortunately, our hotel where we got married, Postcard Inn, has not re opened.  It is pretty depressing there are gates all around it and you can not go in.  From the road you can see the docks are completely demolished and I’ve seen videos of the tiki bar that is completely gone.  I really hope they can open again soon, we love that place.  Our favorite beach Sombrero Beach had loads of sand, we couldn’t tell if they moved it in or it was misplaced by the hurricane.  The Children’s play equipment is closed but other than that the beach was great.  Everything in Key West was back to normal, I assume because that’s where the most tourists are.  So, if you get the chance, visit The Florida Keys!
